Continued food aversion: Training livestock to avoid eating poisonous plants

چکیده

Animals can be trained to avoid eating specific foods by offering them the food and subsequently administering an emtic to induce nausea. The animal associates the taste of the food with the induced illness and subsequently avoids eating that food. Conditioned food aversion (CFA) is a potential tool to prevent livestock poisoning from palatable and abundant poisonous plants. Cattle have been trained to avoid eating tall larkspur (Delphinium barbeyi L. Huth), a particularly troublesome poisonous plant. However, several factors influence the acquisition and retention of food aversions under field grazing conditions. The age and sex of an animal may influence its ability to form and retain aversions. Novelty of the plant and the intensity of the induced illness determine the strength of the aversion. Social facilitation or peer preasure motivates animals to sample the averted food, and the aversion will extinguish if it is not reinforced. Generalizing the aversion created under controlled conditions in a pen, to a complex vegetation community in the field, may be difftcult for some animals. If these obstacles can be overcome, CFA may be an effective tool to reduce the risk of poisoning on poisonous plant infested rangeland.

Conditioned food aversions: principles and practices, with special reference to social facilitation.

Conditioned food aversion is a powerful experimental tool to modify animal diets. We have also investigated it as a potential management tool to prevent livestock from grazing poisonous plants such as tall larkspur (Delphinium barbeyi), white locoweed (Oxytropis sericea) and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) on western US rangelands. The following principles pertain to increasing the strength an...

Adverse influence of social facilitation and learning context in training cattle to avoid eating larkspur.

Through conditioned food aversion learning, livestock can be trained to avoid eating harmful plants. The objectives of this study were to determine whether social facilitation will extinguish an aversion to larkspur (a poisonous plant on mountain rangelands) and to determine whether the aversion can be reinforced to withstand social facilitation in a group-feeding and field-grazing situation. T...

Problem Weeds in Hay and Forages for Livestock

Although they may only make up a small portion of the cases presented to veterinarians, poisoning cases often require special effort. When food animals are exposed to poisonous weeds, a devastating case with large morbidity and mortality may ensue. The concern is for the herd and economics as much as treatment of the individual animal. In addition, producers and veterinarians must address food ...

Poisonous native range plants

Plant poisoning is a common problem throughout North America, causing significant economic losses not only through death loss, but through the costs associated with reproductive loss, poor growth rates, herbicides, etc. Through good pasture management, recognizing toxic plants, and by understanding the effects of toxins on animals, plant poisoning can be largely avoided. Plants contain a variet...

Poisonous Plants That Contaminate Hay and Forages in the Western United States

AND INTRODUCTION In the Western United States poisonous plants are estimated to cost the animal industry more than 200 million dollars annually. The majority of these losses are attributed to livestock grazing on rangelands. Little has been done to determine the costs of livestock poisoned by contaminated feeds which are probably more frequent and costly. Grazing livestock generally avoid eatin...
